(ré)inventions à deux pianos is rooted in Bach’s two-part inventions, originally conceived as studies in clarity, contrapuntal independence, imitation and dialogue between two voices. For Chiahu Lee, these inventions become the basis for a contemporary act of recomposition. The original idea of “two voices” is expanded into the physical and sonic space of two pianos. This allows the voices to multiply, echo, contradict, overlap and move between two instruments. The result is not a conventional arrangement, but a personal reimagining of Bach’s musical foundations. The project fuses classical counterpoint with contemporary textures and stylistic references, including minimalism, pop,

smooth jazz and the influence of electronic music. Some of the inspiration comes from the layering of colours and effects, and from the percussive potential of the piano itself.

The duo Vershinina-Lee released their first album (ré)inventions à deux pianos in 2024 has already received international attention, including BBC Music Magazine’s description of the work as “an invigorating and beguiling spring clean for the ears.”
